Entry to the Olympics
Entry to the Beijing Olympics is currently limited to a maximum of 390 individual shooters. Each of these shooters must have achieved a Minimum Qualifying Score (MQS) for the event/s at an ISSF Championship during the Olympiad (4 years leading up to the games), and either have a Quota Place gained by their nation or a wildcard entry.
If a shooter has gained entry to the Olympics they can shoot additional events in which they have gained an MQS
Olympic Quota Places
A shooter can gain a Quota Place in an Olympic event for their nation at an ISSF World Cup, World Championships, ISSF Continental Championships, or a few other ISSF Championships: note that the Quota Place is awarded to the nation, not the shooter. Once a shooter has gained a Quota Place in that event they can not gain a second Quota in that event.
Although it is usual for the shooter whose score gained the quota place to go to the Olympics, it is not always the case. The nation can give the quota place to any of their shooters who have achieved a MQS, or hand the quota place back to the pool of places.
